If we truly know how to love, then why did God command it? If love is natural to us, why would it need to be a command? 

Love, while natural to humans, is often imperfect. It can be tainted by selfishness, pride, and fear, which is why the command to love serves as a moral guide, encouraging selflessness and sincerity. Many view love as a feeling or an emotion, but biblical teachings emphasizes love as an action and a choice that requires patience, kindness, and sacrifice. 

From a theological perspective, human nature is flawed, and sin affects our ability to love purely. The command to love is a reminder to overcome selfish tendencies and strive for a higher standard. If love were purely instinctual, it would not require effort or intentionality. Commands imply choice, and choosing love, especially in difficult situations like loving one’s enemies, carries moral weight. Additionally, love reflects God's nature. As 1 John 4:8 describes, God is love. 

Following the command to love allows humans to align with divine characteristics and partake in a greater purpose. Ultimately, love is both an inclination and a responsibility. The command to love acknowledges that while humans can love, they must cultivate it intentionally. It is not merely a feeling nor an emotion but a commitment, an action, and a path toward personal and spiritual growth.
